Are you a lover of podcasts? I’m a big fan. I love the medium where all you have is words.  In a lot of ways I become more invested in the stories then if I were watching a show. I feel like I have to concentrate more and listen harder, which I like.  My husband and I listened to a episode of “This American Life” a while back while we were in the kitchen getting stuff done.  By then end we found ourselves both seated at the table, listening, wholeheartedly.

serial 1

Any way, I’ve been binge listening to “Serial” lately. It’s a rehash of a case from the late ’90’s where a Baltimore teen was convicted of killing his ex girlfriend. The reporter isn’t trying to convince the listener of Anan’s innocence, she’s trying to figure out one way or the other right there along side you, the listener.

It’s gripping, I must say, and well worth the listen. If you’re a fan of “This American Life” or just a fan of good, old fashioned story telling I recommend you jump right in to “Serial.” You won’t be disappointed.

Saying Goodbye: Tom Magliozzi

I wanted to take a moment to say goodbye to Tom Magliozzi who died yesterday.  I’ve loved his advise, stories, friendly banter with his brother and, most of all, his laugh for all the years I’ve been listening to the show.  I’ll keep on listening and missing you for as long as they keep your show on the air.

Thanks for the laughs, Tom.  You will be missed.

Rebecca, Your Loyal Listener

Radio Lab and Beyond

“My name is Rebecca and I’m addicted to NPR.”

“Hi, Rebecca.”

It’s kind of a joke between my husband and I.  If I’m talking about a news story, quoting a statistic or telling an interesting story there’s a pretty good chance it’s come from my local NPR station.

As a stay-at-home mom it can be isolating to be alone with children all day but I’ve found that if I switch on my radio to my local NPR station I can be tuned in to the world.

With that preface, I wanted to share a couple of links to some (relatively) recent programs I’ve heard.

A great program on where morality came from here.

A crazy interesting “This American Life” about kids being bad.

Are baboons always violent?  Find out about one congress of baboons that rocks all conventional thoughts on baboon behavior.

If you’ve never been a talk radio person I highly recommend you give it a try.  It’s a whole different experience than watching or reading your news.
